Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Credential

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program is a statewide commitment to provide compassionate and comprehensive response to individuals 14 years and older who have been the victims of sexual assault.  The SANE Program is a collaborative effort among the Board of Nursing and representatives of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Cabinet for Health Services, the Kentucky Hospital Association, the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, the Kentucky Association on Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Nursing Programs, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Kentucky State Police Forensic Lab.  Two registered nurses with forensic experience and two individuals with experience in victim services also assisted in developing this program.

A SANE nurse is a registered nurse trained in the forensic examination of victims of sexual assault and credentialed by KBN.  A nurse examiner conducts the examination, collects and preserves evidence, and testifies in legal proceedings.  The SANE nurse becomes an integral part of the multidisciplinary team investigating the survivors of sexual assault, and should be knowledgeable in the nursing process, forensic nursing concepts, victim’s issues, and legal responsibilities.
