FAQ: Licensure by Examination

Q: When will my application be processed?
A: All applications will be processed within 7 to 14 business days of the date received at KBN.

Q: How do I know the status of my application with KBN?
A:
From this link Application Status, you can see the date your application was received and a list of requirements needed to complete your application process.

When additional information and/or documents are required, you may also receive an email message listing those items.  If a valid email address was not listed on your KBN application, you will receive notification via postal mail that additional information is needed.

Q: When will I receive my Authorization to Test (ATT)?
A: Before an ATT will be issued by Pearson/Vue, KBN must make you eligible to test.  Before you can be made eligible to test:

  • You must have registered with Pearson/VUE (NCLEX).
  • KBN must have received a completed application.
  • KBN must have received verification you have completed your program of nursing.

Q: If I register with Pearson/Vue using my full middle name and my picture identification (ID) only has my middle initial, will I be permitted to sit for NCLEX?
A: Yes, Pearson/Vue will accept the picture ID as long as the middle initial is the same as the first letter of your middle name.

Q: When will I get my test results?
A: Your official test results will be mailed by KBN within 7 to 14 business days of the date you tested.

You can also use our validation link, which provides "real-time" licensure information.

Q: If I have to retake NCLEX, do I have to pay both fees again?
A: Yes, you have to complete both applications again and pay both fees.  Your Criminal background report is good for 6 months from the date it was received at KBN.

Q: If I am unsuccessful on NCLEX, do I have to repeat the clinical internship?
A:
There are two possible outcomes regarding the internship if you are unsuccessful on NCLEX.

  • Situation 1: You are unsuccessful on NCLEX, but completed all 120 clinical internship hours and submitted verification of completing the internship to KBN.
    • Outcome: KBN will void your provisional license, and you may no longer practice in a licensed position.  You must reapply to KBN and to Pearson/Vue.  You will be issued a permanent license after you re-take and pass NCLEX.
  • Situation 2: You are unsuccessful on NCLEX, but did not complete all 120 clinical internship hours.
    • Outcome: KBN will void your provisional license, and you may no longer practice in a licensed position.  You must reapply to KBN and to Pearson/Vue.  After you pass NCLEX, you will be issued a second provisional license that will be valid for 6 months.  You must start the internship from the beginning.  No credit is given for clinical internship hours completed previously.
