Temporary Work Permit (TWP)
Kentucky may issue a one-time only, temporary work permit (TWP) to endorsement applicants when certain regulatory requirements are met. A TWP allows the applicant to practice nursing in Kentucky while awaiting a permanent Kentucky nursing license.

Q: Who is eligible for a temporary work permit (TWP)? A: Applicants for licensure by endorsement who have been licensed by another state's board of nursing are eligible for a twp.
Q: What are the requirements to receive a TWP? A: A temporary work permit will be issued when the following information is received:
- A completed endorsement application form.
- Completed fingerprint card.
- Fee of $169.25 [$150 application processing fee and $19.25 for
fingerprint processing].
- An official transcript with degree and graduation date posted,
when licensure is received in Illinois, California, Washington, and Connecticut or otherwise when needed.
Q: How long does it take to receive a TWP? A: When all requirements are met, it may take up to 14 days from the date KBN receives your application for a TWP to be issued.
Q: When does a TWP expire? A: A TWP is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. It cannot be extended, and you may only be issued a TWP one time.
Q: How does a TWP affect my ability to practice nursing? A: You may practice within the full scope and practice of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse with a TWP.
Q: When will I be issued a permanent license? A: Within 14 days of receipt of ALL the following, a license will be issued:
- Evidence of earning 2 contact hours of HIV/AIDS education from a KBN approved provider [click on the link for more information].
- Validation or original licensure from your state of original licensure or NurSys

- Criminal history report from the FBI.
Q: What happens if my TWP expires and I am not licensed by KBN? A: If your TWP expires and you do not hold a Kentucky nursing license, you must reapply to Kentucky for a license, pay the application fee, and cease working as a nurse in Kentucky until all requirements are met and your permanent license is issued.
- The TWP CANNOT be extended, and you CANNOT be issued a second one.
- It is YOUR responsibility to assure that all requirements are met before your TWP expires.
