Clinical Internship
See the appropriate section below that applies to the type of clinical internship question you have.
Who needs to do the clinical internship? |
All new graduates of a program of nursing must do a clinical internship if they have not practiced as a nurse for at least 120 hours since graduation from the program.
If you are a LPN and are a new graduate from a RN program of nursing, you must do the internship as a Registered Nurse Applicant.
Do I need a license to do the clinical internship? |
You must hold a Provisional License issued by KBN before you can begin your clinical internship.
How long does it take to get a provisional license? |
KBN will issue a Provisional License (PL) within 14 days of receiving the following:
- A completed application and fee.
You must include all 4 pages of the application.
- A fingerprint card and the $19.25 fee.
- An official transcript with degree and date posted.
- Verfication of licensure from your original board of nursing, indicating that you passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
How long do I have to complete the clinical internship? |
The clinical internship must be completed within 6 months of the date the provisional license is issued, which is also the date the provisional license expires.
What title do I use while working under the provisional license? |
If you graduated from a RN program of nursing, you may sign your documentation as "Registered Nurse Applicant" or "RNA."
If you graduated from a LPN program of nursing, you may sign your documentation as "Licensed Practical Nurse Applicant" or "LPNA."
How do I notify KBN that I have completed the clinical internship? |
A Verfication of Completion Form (for the Clinical Internship) is mailed to you with the provisional license. It will not be reissued, so keep the document in a safe place.
The Verfication of Completion Form must be complete with the following information or the form will be returned to you:
- Your signature
- Your name [printed]
- Signature of the person(s) who supervised your internship
- Supervising nurse's license number
After I complete the internship, can I practice as a RN/LPN? |
No. You cannot practice as a licensed RN or licensed LPN until KBN issues you a permanent license. You must continue to practice as a RNA/LPNA under direct supervision until your permanent Kentucky nursing license is issued.
