Welcome!

Our job is to protect public health and welfare by development and enforcement of state laws governing the safe practice of nursing.  We want to assist you in any way possible, and we welcome ideas you have that will help us accomplish our mission.  We invite you to review our website and Contact Us with comments or suggestions.

See the new changes for Kentucky Registered Nurse Aides.  Visit the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry site often for updates.

Online Services

Our online services include change of mailing and/or email address, application status, data roster download, license validation (including nurse aide abuse registry validations), license renewal, and retired license status.

SUBMIT A UNIVERSAL APPLICATION ONLINE:  To submit an application for licensure by examination, reinstatement, or endorsement, go to UNIVERSAL APPLICATIONS.

SUBMIT OR UPDATE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS:  To submit or update an email address, go to ADDRESS/EMAIL CHANGE.

PRIMARY SOURCE VERIFICATION:The KBN website is considered primary source verification and is actually the preferred method of licensure validation instead of viewing the license card.  Both JCAHO and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Office of the Inspector General, consider verification through the website as evidence of licensure.  License cards, which are an additional evidence of licensure, generally take 3 to 6 weeks to print.

KBN does primary source verification of an initial applicant's nursing education.  See 201 KAR 20:070 and 201 KAR 20:110.  See Licensure Validation for additional information.

  NCLEX Eligibility Changes
Effective immediately (see 201 KAR 20:070), all applicants for licensure may be made eligible to sit for NCLEX and be issued a provisional license. This allows an applicant to take NCLEX prior to completing the clinical internship, if they so choose. Passing NCLEX and completion of the clinical internship are required by law in order to be licensed as a nurse in Kentucky. This regulation change will affect all applicants for licensure by examination.

TERCAP
KBN's Investigation and Discipline Section is a participant in the TERCAP project, which was implemented by NCSBN in 1999 to develop new knowledge about the causes of nursing practice breakdown.
